A classic dwarf rainbowfish, Melanotaenia praecox is a peaceful addition to any tropical freshwater aquarium. This species tops out at 2.5 - 3.0 inches in captivity and will play nicely with larger rainbowfish, armoured catfishes from South America as well as most tetra species.

The shimmering iridescent-blue scales and bright red fins make this an especially attractive and eye-catching addition to planted aquariums. Males will flash an electric-white nuptial band when enticing females to spawn and will sport red fins. Females will have orangeish yellow fins; specimens can be sexed at 0.5-0.75 inches, which make them great breeding projects for a lot of beginner hobbyists.

The Neon Dwarf Rainbow is an undemanding feeder and will readily accept most dried or frozen foods presented in smaller sizes to fit their small mouths and narrow throats.

To promote longevity in the aquarium, clean water kept at stable temps between 72-78°F is ideal, as higher temperatures will speed up their metabolism and drastically reduce their lifespan. Melanotaenia praecox is found in acidic conditions but will thrive in pH ranging from 6.0 - 8.5 as long as conditions are kept stable.
