Apistogramma Agassizii "Fire Red"
Apistogramma Agassizii "Fire Red"
With most Apistogramma species, you have high color variability in male specimens and some rendition of "black and yellow" in female specimens. Not so with the "Fire Red" Agassizi Apisto! The females of this variation are a bright red-orange, while the males have peach to red-orange in the body, red-orange fins and purple under the dorsal fin. Honestly, with this variation, its hard to decide who's prettier!
Apistogramma agassizi has many color variations and high variability in differing populations, with this variation gaining popularity in recent years due to its high contrastability against lush green vegetation in planted tank arrangements.
The "Double Red Agassizi" is a hardy Apisto that tolerates a wide range of water parameters and will accept most foods available in pet stores, however, quality foods high in carotenoids will bring out the best red colors in this species. Of all the Apistogramma complexes, the Agassizi/Bitaeniata complexes seem the most aggressive with conspecifics, so it is recommended to have ample surface area at the bottom of the tank with plenty of foliage and shelter if housing more than one specimen in a tank.
