The medaka rice fish (Oryzias latipes) is a small, hardy freshwater fish native to East Asia, commonly found in rice paddies, streams, and ponds. Medaka rice fish originate from small ponds, shallow rivers, and rice fields. They can survive in a wide range of water temperatures (32–108 °F), but they prefer a water temperature of (59–82 °F).
"Lame" medaka rice fish are a variety of Japanese ricefish prized for their shimmering, iridescent scales. The term "lame" refers to the sparkling, metallic effect seen on their bodies, caused by the unique way light reflects off their specialized scales. This gives them a distinctive, glittering appearance that sets them apart from other medaka varieties.
